Avra Kedavra Kamp

What has two legs, two arms, a brain, rolls around in verbs, pounces on poetry, and explodes with giggles? A language loony; a human child experiencing Avra Kedavra Kamp, a literary arts camp for 8-12 year old persons.

Avra Kedavra literally means, “I will create what I utter” in ancient Aramaic. As the wand of word power waves, reality comes into being. We make our own reality with our words, things poof into being with our tongues and pens. We can belligerently hurt, warmly embrace, or deeply empower another with the smallest utterance. This equals power. Whether spoken, signed, brailed, or written, Words transform into either swords or plough shears. Therefore, we must be more aware of the power of the Word as it becomes reality. This takes practice, discipline, intentionality, and just plain openness to the wonder of it all.

Avra Kedavra Kamp invites kids/families in the Wenatchee Valley in need of quality summer activity to this week-long day camp of Word wackiness. Language loonies will explore the literary arts and the power of Words by rummaging about in ‘Yessence’ poetry, 10 minute free writing, ‘verb’ acting, playing literary hopscotch, storytelling, reading, Osprey Diving, Metaphor Minding, Nerbing, Syntax crashing, and just plain scrutinizing, chewing, mulling, immersing ourselves deeply in language play. As we do so, we then touch the creative spark that stretches the mind and spirit.
